Update: No spaces remain for S/T Workshop in Jacksonville
January 25, 2008
No space remains for BLET members interested in attending the Education and Training Department's Secretary-Treasurer Compliance Workshop in Jacksonville, Fla.
Currently, 11 spaces remain for the Jacksonville workshop, which will be held March 2-5. Those who wish to attend should register as soon as possible through the BLET website at: http://www.ble-t.org/st.
After registering for the workshop on the BLET website, members will be given hotel contact information and special room rate information. Members will be responsible for making their own hotel reservations.
Many changes have been implemented again this year regarding the filing of LM reports, and it is important for S-Ts to receive training so their reports will be submitted correctly. The changes to the LM Report, along with information regarding the new 990-N and EFTPS, will be explained in class.
Among many other informative sessions, Secretary-Treasurers will also be shown how to use the BLET National Division's web-based reporting system, which S-Ts use for membership reporting and tax compliance.
The Jacksonville workshop begins at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, and will conclude at noon on Wednesday, March 5. It will take place at Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront hotel.
For more information, please contact Ken Kroeger of the BLET Education & Training Dept. at (216) 272-0986 or kroeger@ble-t.org.
BLET Tax Compliance Update
January 24, 2008
Internal Revenue Service regulations require that the BLET National Division inform its members that a certain portion of your National Division dues are not tax deducible as a miscellaneous itemized deduction on your personal tax returns.
Specifically, 5 percent of your $34 monthly dues to the National Division are not tax deductible. That 5 percent reflects expenses associated with political lobbying efforts by the union, which are not tax deductible.
LM Reports - Important Notice
December, 2007
The BLET National Division is working with the Department of Labor to resolve reporting dues on the LM Reports, but the solution may not be in place by January 1, 2008.
Therefore, it is recommended that LM Report not be filed and sent to the ND before February 15, 2008. This will hopefully avoid having to file amended LM Reports, as was the case for some last last year.
Please look for any update regarding this issue on the BLET website.
Did you Recieve a 990 Notice?
September 28, 2007
Anyone receiving an IRS notice regarding the 990, please send the paperwork to the National Division and we will deal with the IRS.
Form 944 Notice
July 26, 2006
BLET National Secretary-Treasurer Bill Walpert announced that he has good news for Secretary-Treasurers.
The Internal Revenue Service is sending out notices regarding a new form 944, Walpert said. Those receiving this notice are instructed to file the 944 instead of the 941, which means less work for Secretary-Treasurers!
The 944 is an Annual Federal Employer's Tax Return which cuts down the amount of paperwork required. Please note, you can only file this form if the IRS sends the notice.
The National Division will be contacting them to find out the guidelines and hopefully many monthly filers will be switched to an Annual Federal Income Tax Return.
As more information is generated, the ND will keep you posted.
